A Day Trip to Sentosa Island

“Voyage, travel, and change of place impart vigor” – Seneca

The Merlion, a mythical creature half lion and half fish which is sort of the mascot of Singapore.  The original name for Singapore  means" fishing village" and the name Singapore means "lion city" so the two were combined to create the Merlion.

Sentosa is a small resort island just off of Singapore where many of the locals spend the day or the weekend. You can get there by subway and then by either crossing a bridge on foot, taking a taxi or by my favorite, the cable car (in three weeks into this world trip I have taken more cable cars than I had taken in my whole life..... and there is still Rio!) There are natural attractions such as the botanical gardens, zoo and marine habitat as well as beaches, hotels, a Universal Studios and other local attractions.

The cable car ride only takes about 8 minutes from Singapore. We walked around, went to a couple of the attractions like the sky ride (like a ski lift) and the luge (downhill go cart) looked at some of the exotic birds, plants and flowers and then took the cable car back to the harbor front where we had a delicious Chinese restaurant (ethnic Chinese make up more than half of the population in Singapore, with Malays next and then Indians- a very blended culture which is good for the food.) There is even a group called the Peranakan, who are those Chinese who came to Singapore many years ago and married with the Malay peoples.
